I have a GED. Not a gap in my resume where a degree should be — a GED, specifically. The piece of paper that tells every institutional filter I ever hit: proceed with caution. I built two companies, published eighteen books, and wrote production code running in enterprise systems, wearing that signal. This is a post about what happened to that signal, and what replaced it.
Let me be precise about what a credential actually is, mechanically, because I think people conflate two different things. A credential is a costly signal — an investment of time, money, and access designed to communicate competence to a third party who can't verify your competence directly. The degree says: this person sat in these rooms, passed these tests, survived this process. Trust them, at least to the degree that the institution behind the credential is trustworthy.
That logic worked when the credential was the only way to verify competence cheaply. Hiring a developer and finding out six months later they can't actually build anything is expensive. Checking if they went to a school with a CS program is free. So companies defaulted to the credential as a proxy. Not because it was a great proxy — it was always leaky, always missed people, always rewarded access over ability — but because it was the cheapest proxy available.
Something changed. The cheaper proxy arrived.
What the Signal Actually Was
Here's the uncomfortable thing about the old credential system: it wasn't primarily about competence. It was about filter compliance. The question a credential answers is not "can this person do the work?" — it answers "did this person clear the same hurdles as the other people we've already decided to trust?" Those are different questions with different answers.
The person who couldn't afford four years of school, or who didn't have the right test scores, or who took care of a parent instead of attending university, or who was building something instead of studying something — that person was filtered out by a system that was measuring their access to the institutional pipeline, not their ability to produce. For most of the last century, those two things were correlated enough that the proxy mostly worked. For a lot of people on the margins of the system, it never did.
The gap between those two columns is the gap that people like me fell into. I could do column two. I just couldn't do column one. And for a long time, there was no third option — no alternative path to demonstrating the column two things without first clearing the column one things.

The New Signal Table
Every domain has a credential hierarchy that's being disrupted at a different speed. Here's where the signal shift stands right now, honestly, without pretending the old system is fully gone — it isn't:

The shift is not uniform and I won't pretend it is. Law and medicine have credential requirements that are regulatory, not just social — you can't practice law without a bar license regardless of how good your reasoning is. The shift is happening fastest in the domains where the credential was always most arbitrary: tech, writing, design, founding. The places where what you built was always a better answer to "can this person do the thing?" than where they went to school.
The Cost of the Old Proxy
The cost of the old proxy wasn't just to people like me who didn't have the credential. It was to every organization that used the credential as the gate. You filtered out the people most likely to build things that actually worked — because those people, disproportionately, were busy building things instead of collecting credentials. You kept the people who were very good at institutional compliance and very patient with process. Sometimes those are the same people. Often they're not.
I want to say this carefully because it's easy to misread: I'm not saying credentials are worthless or that everyone who has one is less capable than someone who doesn't. That's obviously false and it's not the claim. The claim is narrower: the credential was always a proxy, the proxy was always imperfect, and a better proxy is now available for many domains. The better proxy is the work itself.
What This Means If You're Holding the Old Map
If you're in a domain where the signal shift is happening, the old map is becoming a liability. Not immediately — the people who have the credential and also have the work output are in the best position of anyone. But the people who have the credential and are relying on it as a substitute for output? The market is re-grading those papers right now and the grades are coming down.
If you're in a domain where you don't have the credential and you've been using that as a reason not to build — the map changed. The credential gap is not zero. In some rooms it still matters. But the gap between "has credential, no portfolio" and "has portfolio, no credential" has inverted in a lot of the domains that matter most right now.
Here's the practical implication: the portfolio is now the most important asset a builder can have. Not the portfolio in the old sense — a PDF of past projects you email to recruiters — but a live, public record of what you've built, what it does, who uses it, and what it's produced. The kind of portfolio that answers the competence question faster and more completely than any degree program ever could.
I built mine in public. Badly at first, then better. Each thing I shipped was worse than the thing I'm building now and better than the thing I built before it. That's the record. That's the signal. Anyone who wants to know if I can do the work can look at the work. The credential conversation doesn't even come up anymore.
Build something. Ship it publicly. Let it speak for you in every room you haven't walked into yet. The institution doesn't need to stamp it. The market will.
